Looking Glasses

Looking Glass Sites

What are they? Looking glass sites are organizations, usually ISP’s, Telecoms, or Universities, that are kind enough to leave a router or Unix interface open for network diagnostics.

Back in the good old days these were really pretty open. You obviously didn’t have exec privileges, but you were on actual routers. That’s no longer the case these days.

These are however, routers or boxes in the know. Out there for you to take advantage of. To see how your network looks from different spots all over.

There are lots of links to sites on the left. Play with them. Check pings and trace routes from them to you or to other sites. Check DNS resolution. It’s all good.

The next time some tells you a customer can’t get to your website. You can now show them why, it’s not you. It’s a Sprint backbone problem, or a connection over-seas.

Or maybe they are rebooting the Internet ;)
