Internet Perils.com it just gets better.

So after I requested that the stop probing me. I got this response:

These probes are part of an ongoing project which discovers and monitors Internet topology risks outside firewalls in cooperation with the anti-phishing and Internet stability monitoring efforts of several U.S. government law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The server you mention, www.apopka.net with address 216.136.46.205, is a part of the government agency list that we created at the request of the FCC before Hurricane Rita. InternetPerils data collection is light weight and unintrusive.

Most people are happy to be included in this Internet wide project once they learn about InternetPerils monitoring projects. However, we do have a policy of excluding destinations and netblocks and I have removed your host from the government set.

Well, excuse me, but if you want to ping me once to discover that I’m here and a dead end to map out the internet for your government project that’s one thing. To hit me every now and then to see if I’m still here is another. But to ding me often enough that my IDS system says your a potential threat is something entirely different.

No, you need to ask us before you do that. From the looks of the website and the communication, and the lovely webserver at www.apopka.net it’s clear to me that InternetPerils is just another organization dicking around with the internet and more than likely sucking money out of the government, and probably using up good grant money that could go for something better.

No, I’m not happy to be included in this. I have no interest in Hurricane Rita. Last time I was in Florida, there was still garbage on the streets from Rita. If you want to do something, go pick that up and leave my servers and network out of it. FEMA won’t touch the garbage because people have put their real garbage with the hurricane garbage so it was no longer hurricane only garbage, so it just sits there and rots. Excellent.

If you want people to buy what you’re selling fix your website so it looks more official, and your servers resolve to servers that aren’t city servers welcoming me to the foliage capitol of Florida.

Sheesh.

Internet Perils.com Who are these asshats?

So just who are these asshats with the cheesy website who find it necessary to ping one of my servers every few seconds without asking first?

internetperils

I certainly hope this isn’t part of their strategy to provide that killer graphic on their home page showing the internet’s major routing changes.

We’ve sent them a cease and desist, let’s see how long that takes to get them to stop.

InternetPerils, Inc. provides quantification and visualization products to help insurers, financial institutions, banks, telecommunications providers, government, and enterprises manage their Internet business risks.

It looks like they do this by pinging and exploiting other companies networks as opposed to building networks and offices of their own, or using those of their clients.

-Nice.
