Windows Virtual Desktop Manager [Free]

If you didn’t know, Microsoft gives you a free windows virtual desktop manager for XP. All you have to do is go looking for it and download it. It’s part of the PowerToys for Windows XP package availble here.

Once installed you’ll get a nice little toolbar added to your Windows Taskbar:

From which you can manage your (4) new virtual desktops. What could be easier?
The menu is simple, turn it on, turn it off, show animations, etc.

I find this extrememly useful for keeping things organized. Email in one desktop, browsing in another. Process that will take a while to run in another. Things that tend to distract me in another Virtual Desktop.
It’s not 100% foolproof since your process bar is the same in all of them. Things are not locked into the desktop you started them in. In typical *nux VMD’s they are and you need to send them to another window or desktop. Not so here. Still it’s useful and FREE.
No ill effects as of yet. YMMV.

Directory Express Screenshots

Directory Express is almost there. I’ve stopped adding features and am cleaning the code. Here are some more screenshots of the phone itself. These pics were taken of the desktop Cisco ip communicator. It’s basically a 7970 color screen.

Here is the Main Menu showing that in addition to the ordinary directory options you can search by name, initials or Department.

Searching by name lets you specify a first or last name by text.

Searching by initials mean punch in the first initial and last initial by number. if you want to find the number of John Smith you would punch in 57 and submit. This kind of search is wicked fast with the least number of button pushes and in small organizations gets you to the right person quickly.

Searching by department rips through the Active Directory to find all departments listed, so this is a dynamic list of entries in the users AD department field. Choose one to see the list.

Notepad2 for Windows

Need a nice light-weight text editor for windows? A better replacement for Notepad but not something that’s a pain in the arse to use?

I needed to tweak a couple files on the server and since it’s a plain Win2k3 server install my choices were Notepad and Wordpad. Yuch. Line numbers rule. You need those, especially if you need to find something to edit in php at line number 68 :)

Notepad2 is sweet!
